We had a fantastic first week of Hudson's life! My mom, Shu Shu was with us from the day that Hudson was born until the following Saturday. She was an amazing help and comfort to have here with us. She cooked fantastic meals, cleaned the kitchen and did laundry constantly, and she even reorganized our pantry! She was a great help with Hudson and offered lots of words of encouragement, wisdom and advice. We LOVED having her here and will remember that special time always. Towards the end of Hudson't first week, Jon and I started to get more confident about taking care of him and so Mom was a good extra set of hands those last few days as we tried to do most things on our own for Hudson.
Feeding went pretty well the first week. I was super nervous about nursing and didn't know what to expect...I've heard to stories that it can be really challenging and hard. Well, I feel extremely blessed that it went well and is still going well. Jon and Mom were great helpers and encouragers as Hudson and I tried to figure out the whole feeding thing.
Sleeping for Hudson the first week was great, but sleeping for us was tough. We had to get up twice in the middle of the night each night to feed him and he would just take quite awhile to eat. We did have 3 nights that week where he pretty much wailed straight from midnight to 3am! Luckily those moments have subsided and if he's had anything like that happen it hasn't been in the middle of the night for that long.
All three of us got peed on by Hudson during the first week and Jon even got pooped on!! I think we have all mastered the art of protecting ourselves from the pee now though when we are changing diapers.
We took a TON, and I mean A TON of pictures and I've posted quite a few below. I just can't help myself. Of course I have them all saved on the computer, but when I go to print the blog, I want to have some of these great pics from the beginning of his life in the book.
We had some firsts....our first family walk, his first bath at home, first time in his bouncy seat, first time in his swing, first bottle from daddy, first dr. appt, first outing, and our favorite of the week were his first smiles!
We were super nervous about how Kaiser would react to Hudson and we prayed about this meeting and transition throughout the entire pregnancy. We are so happy to say that it has been fantastic! Kaiser is aware of his presence but not overly concerned with it. He smells Hudson and looks at him, but he is not mad or aggressive about his presence. Boots has been pretty curious and doesn't really like it when Hudson cries real hard. We are SO relieved that things are going with with our pets and Hudson.
Some other things this first week we noticed are that his hair is growing and sometimes it looks blonde and sometimes it has a reddish tint....it just depends on the sunlight. He is a noisy and squeaky baby...making lots of grunts and squeaks all the time...even when he's happy. He didn't really like the bassinet we had in our room for sleeping so we transitioned to the infant sleeper that is attached to our pack and play. He spits up about half of the time, but instead of coming out of his mouth, it is coming out of his nose! Those finger nails are sooo long and we've been trying to file them down so he'll stop scratching his face. He loves his paci! He makes some hilarious gulping/weezing noises when he sucking hard at feeding time. We had to catch it on video to show him someday. We tried swaddling this first week and most times he liked it, but towards the end of the week, he really wanted his hands free. He wrinkles his forehead a lot when he makes different faces. We think his nose looks like Jon's and other than that this first week we think that he just looks like his own little self...it will be neat to see how he changes in the weeks to come.

Kaiser was curious with McKenna, so mom attached his leash to her belt while she cooked to keep him occupied. It was hilarious!

Man, what a fantastic first week. So many great moments and memories that we'll cherish forever with our sweet baby boy. I tried to imagine how intense our happiness would be once he was born, but the feeling is so powerful and hard to imagine until the moment is actually here. It is the best feeling in the world to be a mom and a dad. We are beyond being in love with him.
